Iqaluit Sustainable Arctic Neighbourhood Plan
Community Design (Project completed by Christopher Straka while employed by FoTenn Consultants Inc.)
This project was the first comprehensive arctic neighbourhood plan, with measurable sustainability principles, completed for Iqaluit, the capital of the territory of Nunavut. The design guides development while considering community needs, values, available resources, and the extreem climate. The Plateau neighbourhood features development practices including: a road and lot orientation that minimizes snow drifting and maximizes solar exposure as well as views to the sea; a complete network of pedestrian walkways, open spaces and parks; and a mixture of land uses that support the community’s cultural and socio-economic diversity. The Plateau Development Scheme was approved by Iqaluit Council in October 2004. In 2006 the plan was granted the Alberta Association of the Canadian Institute of Planners Award of Excellence.
